Non-metallic Materials Commonly Used in Machining

1.POM

POM is the most commonly used material in non-standard machinery. The surface of this material is relatively smooth and wear-resistant. It can be used continuously at a temperature of -40° to 100°C. With in 0.05mm, it is generally used for lightweight shafts or gears and other parts.

2.PTFE

It is a polymer material. It is very resistant to high and low temperature, can reach -180 ℃ to 260 ℃, the friction coefficient is extremely low, the friction with steel materials can reach 0.04, which is close to rolling friction, and it is also one of the most corrosion-resistant materials in the world. Resistant to any organic solvent. The material is relatively soft, not easy to be processed and easily deformed, and cannot be processed high-precision parts. Generally used in mechanical design for wear-resistant parts, such as chain guides, W-type seals, etc.

3.Nylon

Nylon is one of the most widely used materials in non-standard machinery. This material is wear-resistant and self-lubricating, and can be beaten with lubricating oil at high temperature, so that its friction coefficient is extremely low. The high temperature resistance can reach 160 ℃, and it can be used continuously, but it is easy to absorb water and expand when immersed in water, which will affect the accuracy.

4.PVC

The material is cheap and widely used, and it is also one of the commonly used materials for non-standard machinery. PVC has anti-static and non-anti-static materials. In electronic products, the belt used is anti-static. There is also the difference between pvc hard material and soft material. Generally, the hard material that bears the load is basically the hard material, such as tooling board.

5.PU

It has good oil resistance, toughness, wear resistance, aging resistance and adhesion; it has the rigidity of plastic and the elasticity of rubber. Industry-specific (PU); wheels, shovel wheels, skateboard wheels, smoke generator wheels, load-bearing wheels, drive wheels, etc.; muffler layer, seals, buffer heads, buffer parts, anti-scratch parts, anti-scratch parts, fixture pads , Lightweight cushion is generally made of polyurethane.

6.ABS

ABS plastic is a resin made of three monomers, A (acrylonitrile) B (butadiene) S (styrene), their different contents can be made into various resins. Among the machinery, it is suitable for general parts, wear-reducing and wear-resistant parts, and transmission parts. ABS is also one of the main materials for 3D printing, and it is also the most stable material in 3D printing.

7. Rubber

It refers to a highly elastic polymer material with reversible deformation. When the friction coefficient is increased on the surface of the drum in the machine, the rubber is covered with rubber, which has high wear resistance and good sealing performance. The oil seal and o-ring are made of rubber. However, the rubber will age, generally crack and harden.

8.Bakelite

Phenolic plastic has high mechanical strength and good wear resistance. There are anti-static and non-anti-static options. It can be used for tooling boards, fixture pads, and lightweight materials, but its mechanical properties are poor. The precision after machining is not high. Therefore, it cannot be used in machinery with large loads and high precision.

9.Ceramic AL2O3

Ceramic AL2O3 materials have the characteristics of high hardness, high strength and brittleness, and are difficult to process materials. It has a wide range of uses and can be used as crucibles, engine spark plugs, high temperature refractories, thermowells, sealing rings, etc., as well as tools and molds.

10.Carbon Fiber

Carbon fiber composite material refers to a new type of fiber material with high strength and high modulus fiber with a carbon content of more than 95%. High strength (5 times that of steel), excellent heat resistance (can withstand high temperatures above 2000 ° C), excellent thermal shock resistance, low thermal expansion coefficient (small deformation), small heat capacity (energy saving), small specific gravity (1/5 of steel), excellent corrosion resistance and radiation performance.
